Windhoek Declaration

The Declaration of Windhoek is a statement in which " the creation of an independent, pluralistic and free press " is referred to and mentioned as a " cornerstone of democracy and economic development ." It was adopted at a UNESCO conference in the Namibian capital Windhoek on May 3, 1991.

At the suggestion of UNESCO, the UN General Assembly declared May 3, on 20 December 1993 in commemoration of the adoption of the Declaration on International Press Freedom Day.
