Winston Mankunku Ngozi

Winston Mankunku (* 1943 in Retreat, Cape Town, † October 12, 2009 in Cape Town, the original name of Winston Monwabisi Ngozi ) was a South African musician of Cape Jazz ( tenor and soprano saxophone).

Life and work

His mother was responsible for the development of his musicality; the self-taught first played piano, then trumpet, before the age of sixteen he took up the saxophone. In the early 1960s, he was - like many others - relocated to Gugulethu. He was accompanied by musicians from the Cape Town scene as Midge Pike, Parks Joya, Cups & Saucers and Merton Barrow, as well as influenced by John Coltrane. Early on, he played in deliberate violation of the apartheid laws concerts with musicians from different ethnic backgrounds - from fear of repression behind a curtain and under the pseudonym Winston man ( which led to his stage name later).

In 1968 he took up with the trio of Early Mabuza Album Yakhal ' Inkomo, which sold very well and whose play Dedication John Coltrane and Horace Silver is dedicated. Despite award as "Jazz Musician of the Year " on the Castle Lager Jazz Festival he could hardly earn a living as a musician. In 1969 he took on the Chris Schilder Quintet, 1975, The Cliffs and 1976 ( under a pseudonym ) on Sammy Hartman's album District Six. 1976 made ​​him bassist Johnny Gertze with pianist Mike Perry known, with whom he worked from the early 1980s for a long time. The two took in 1987 on the album Jika, some with exiled musicians in London. 1989, when both were touring with Dudu Pukwana, Lucky Ranku and Ernest Mothle by the United Kingdom. Also he gave in Germany and in 1993 in Scandinavia concerts. In 1996, he was on tour, where it came with Jack van Poll in Belgium also on the interaction with Toots Thielemans. The album Molo Africa contained the hit " A Song for Bra Des Tutu " and was awarded the South African Music Award ( SAMA ) for Best Traditional Jazz Album of 1999.

Mankunku also worked on various projects with the band The Soul Jazz Men from Port Elizabeth. He played with the most important musicians of the South African scene, such as with Barney Rachabane, Chris McGregor, Victor Ntoni, Monty Weber, Abdullah Ibrahim, Pat Matshikiza, Sandile Shanga, Darius Brubeck and Roger Khosa. He also has performed with Chick Corea, Joe Henderson and Manu Dibango.
