History

After the construction of the railway line from Schwerin to Wismar, a station was needed at the endpoint. The chosen site offered convenient access to the port of Wismar. By the end of 1847, the first building, about two sheds for material and thresholds or Cyanisierungsgebäude emerged. Later, the engine shed, a carriage house, a tool shed and the Koksmagazin and a coke oven were added. For the construction of the planned reception building around 28,500 dollars were estimated.

When the railway line was inaugurated in 1848, the roundhouse was completed, there was also a cattle ramp and a large hub. By 1857 the carriage house was used as a reception hall and shed for goods. There was a station forecourt and a promenade that ran from Linde garden to the port. Next to the station was a railway hotel. The former water tower is still standing. Between 1884 and 1894 the railway system were expanded and extended the reception building. At the station forecourt should be applied according to a plan from 1896 parking spaces for coaches, private cars and buses. An underpass for pedestrians was constructed around the turn of the century.

From 1894 to 1947 rail vehicles were produced from the nearby railcars and railcar factory in Wismar.
