Witkowo

Witkowo (1940-1945 Wittingen ) is a town in Poland, in Wielkopolska in the powiat Gnieźnieński.

History

The first mention of today's Witkowo dates from 1363rd Between 1676 and 1684 the city was granted a city charter. 1684 was the right year to hold markets added. At the Second Partition of Poland, the city came to the province of South Prussia. As in 1807, the Duchy of Warsaw was established Witkowo was the same part, but came in 1815, after the dissolution of the Duchy, back to Prussia. 1817 raged a serious fire in the city whose construction lasted until 1847. 1887, the Prussian circle Witkowo was founded. 1896 a narrow-gauge railway was put into operation. On 12 November 1918 at the end of the First World War, the city administration was taken over by Polish workers 'and soldiers' councils. 1926 powiat Witkowo was dissolved. In September 1939, the city was captured during the Polish campaign of the German Wehrmacht. On 21 January 1945 the Red Army marched into the city and Witkowo was back in the consequence part of Poland.
