Witold Rowicki

Witold Rowicki (real name Kalka, born February 26, 1914 in Taganrog, † October 1, 1989 in Warsaw) was a Polish conductor.

Life

Rowicki completed his studies in 1938 from the Conservatory of Krakow, where he became professor of violin. During the occupation by the German Reich Rowicki was a member of the Symphony Orchestra of Krakow (violin and viola). After the war, in 1945 he became head of the music department of the Polish Radio in Katowice ( Katowice), southern Poland under the communist regime. He founded the Polish Radio Orchestra (now the Great Symphony Orchestra of Polish Radio and Television ).

1950 Rowicki moved on to Warsaw, where he founded the National Philharmonic. He was a three-year interruption from 1955 to 1958, Bohdan Wodiczko conducted the Philharmonic, its musical director until his retirement in 1977 ( successor Kazimierz Kord ).

1983-1985 Rowicki was the successor of James Loughran chief conductor of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra ( successor to Horst Stein ).
