Wittgenstein-Preis

The Wittgenstein Award is the highest honor awarded with prize money of up to 1.5 million euro price of the Republic of Austria in the field of science, named after the Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein.

The award was established by the then Science Minister Rudolf Scholten and Arnold Schmidt launched in 1996 and is usually once held annually by the Fund for Scientific Research and awarded by the Federal Ministry for Science and Research.

Criteria and award procedures

For an award to the Wittgenstein Prize only scientists that are suggested by the proposal entitled to come into question. There is no quota restriction on individual scientific disciplines. Can only be nominated in Austria researchers working - their origin and nationality does not matter. The price will be once a year, twice awarded in some years.

The prize is worth up to 1.5 million euros. The amount of the award winners can spend as conveying the course of five (extendable to six ) years relatively free for research purposes.

The price is based heavily on the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize, the selection of the award winner will however be performed by an independent jury. This is made up of 14 international scientists from prestigious research centers and institutes - come - for example, Harvard or the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Together with the Wittgenstein Prize awards the same jury also annually the start price.
