Wittow Ferry

The Wittower Ferry is a ferry for pedestrians and vehicles (up to a respective gross vehicle weight of 30 t) from the heartland of the island of Rügen, the Muttland, to Wittow peninsula in the north. She also gave the district Wittower ferry the community Wiek her name. This is the Rassower current at the cusped headland between Wieker Bodden and Bodden Breetzer on the north bank. On the southern shore is the ferry dock between the hamlets Vaschvitz and fishing village of the municipality of Trent.

If in severe winters freeze the waters of the lagoon, the last water bodies remain open at this approximately 350 -m-wide constriction by the flow to and from the Great Jasmund and then offer many waterfowl refuge.

Historical

In the Middle Ages it was common to ferry in this area by boat. Due to the rugged coastlines reprimanding the detours were otherwise significantly. Also the dam between the Great and Little Jasmund Jasmund in Lietzow there is only since 1868, so by land to the Schmale Heide ( Prora ) had to be dodged.

Only with the opening of the 37.9 km long 750 mm narrow gauge railway Bergen- Trent Wittower ferry - Wiek- old churches of the Rügen narrow gauge railway ( RüKB ) on December 21, 1896 began a powerful and regular ferry service. The two ferries " Wittow " and " mountains " that were built in Stettin in 1896 or 1911, trajektierten decades three wagons or ( if necessary) a steam locomotive, and as a rule only freight cars were set, change had to people.

On September 10, 1968, the stretch Wittower ferry ( Fährhof ) Old churches were shut down, and the ships transported from now on only pedestrians and cars. Thus, this unique little train ferry was history. On January 19, 1970, the track section Bergen- Wittower was decommissioned ferry. The ferries and plants were then transferred to the " White Fleet ".

Notwithstanding the real names of today's districts was the name of the train station on the north shore " Fährhof " and on the south bank " Wittower ferry".

Both ships sided until 1994 or 1996 as the " mountain " was scrapped after initial request of conservation in the Museum of Technology Prora 1997 and the " Wittow " was until 2005 the old "funnel", the original investors in the ferry terminal, and should then be converted into Barth to a museum café, to which she was seated next to the museum in the former Zuckerfabrick the Barth harbor on land. Currently, the " Wittow " stands as posted in the museum for sale (as of July 2011).

1996 a new ferry " Wittow " was placed in service after more modern and wider ferry pier had been built.

At the Wittower ferry crosses a 110 kV transmission line to the substation planks village on two 95 meter high masts the throat with a span of 840 meters.
