Woleai, also called Furarappu, is an inhabited atoll in the Pacific. It lies in the east of Yap, a Micronesian island territory, which constitutes the modern state of the Federated States of Micronesia with four other island territories.

In a broader sense Wolei or the Woleai refers to a group of atolls, which, alongside the atoll Woleai also Eauripik, Ifaluk, Faraulep, Elato and Lamotrek belong.

Geography

The atoll has the shape of a figure eight. It is 11.5 long from east to west. The maximum length of seven kilometers is located in the western area. At the central bottleneck, it is only 2.5 km wide. The total area of the atoll is 48 km ². Of this, 4.5 km ² (according to other sources only 3.9 km ²) on the 18 islands and 29 km ² of the lagoon. A shallow coral reef divides the lagoon into two basins, East and West Lagoon Lagoon. West Lagoon is something twice as large as East Lagoon, and has deeper depths of 30 to 50 meters.

The southern edge of the atoll has greater depths and a few islands, including Falalis, the southernmost island of the atoll.

The atoll in 2008 had a population of 1081st to 2000 census there were 975 in 1970 1284 people were counted, of which 370 on the main island Falealop ( Falalap ).

On Woleai Woleaianisch and English is spoken.

Management

The atoll is the third constituency in the State of Yap, one of the five boroughs ..

In Yap State Code seven main islands are specifically mentioned.

Of this form Falalop ( Falalap ) Mariyang ( Mariyang ) Paliau and Tahoilap ( Tohoilap ) in the eastern part of the atoll, the (municipality ) Woleai Islands while Falalus (south), and Sileap Woteggai (Northwest) form their own communities.

The atoll is in the time zone UTC 10.

History

During the Second World War, the atoll served as command landing site of the Imperial Japanese Army.
