Wolfgang Altenburg

Wolfgang Altenburg ( * June 24, 1928 in Pila ) is a retired general the Bundeswehr. He was from 1983 to 1986 Inspector General of the Bundeswehr and 1986-1989 Chairman of the NATO Military Committee.

Life

1944 Altenburg Naval Auxiliary was on Helgoland. After the captivity Altenburg was at home in the Bremen area and went through a vocational training as a hotel manager. He then worked in a managerial position in the food and supply area in Bremen.

In 1956, he joined as a cadet in the Bundeswehr. After completion of officer training at the Artillery Training Battalion and some troops uses as a platoon leader and troop commander, he was trained from 1962 to 1964 at the Staff College in Hamburg for a general staff officer. This was followed by staff and management responsibilities at home and abroad, among others at the 6th Panzer Grenadier Division in Neumünster.

Multiple uses as auxiliary speaker and speaker led in the Federal Ministry of Defence. In 1971 he became deputy director for nuclear planning issues at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe ( SHAPE). Altenburg was commander of Panzergrenadier Brigade 7 and head of the Operations Staff of the Armed Forces. In 1979 he was German representative to the Military Committee of NATO. After that, he was Commanding General of the III. Corps and from 1983 to 1986 Inspector General of the Bundeswehr. 1986 chose him the chief of staff of NATO as Chairman of the NATO Military Committee, the highest military authority of the alliance. He finished his tour of duty in Brussels in 1989.

During the long years of his military service General Altenburg also worked in the United States.

Since 1990, General exerts A.D. Altenburg advisory activities in matters of security and military policy from, including at NATO, on domestic and foreign governmental and study institutes as well as in the economic and industrial sectors. On top of lectures and media work.

Wolfgang Altenburg is married. He has three children, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Housed Altenburg is now in Bremen- Nord.
