Wolfgang Heimbach

Wolfgang Heimbach (* 1613 in Ovelgönne ( Wesermarsch ), † 1678 in an unknown location ) was a North German Baroque painter.

Life

Wolfgang Heimbach was born about 1605 in Ovelgönne as the son of a native of Thuringia fruit writer Wolf Heimbach. The painting and drawing talent of the young Bach's home was discovered by Count Anton Günther of Oldenburg, who often stayed in his sovereign's castle Ovelgönne. To deepen his art of the deaf and dumb Heimbach was sent by Count in the Netherlands. To 1636/37 he worked for Bremen client. As court painter, he was temporarily in the service of Anton Günther, but also stayed in the years 1640-1651 in Italy. In this creative period he worked for the noble houses Doria Pamphili - and Medici. 1653 bis 1662/63 he served as court painter to King Frederick III. (Denmark and Norway) operates. From 1670 until his death he was in the service of the Prince Bishop of Munster, Christoph Bernhard von Galen.

Works

Heimbach's works are the portrait and assign the genre painting. Known examples are his portrait of Pope Innocent X ( Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen) or the portrait of Queen Christina of Sweden ( Museum Hessen Kassel, Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, Kassel). An example of its genre paintings is " The Sick " (Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg). His oeuvre was heavily influenced by the works of Caravaggio Gerrit van Honthorst and Georges de la Tour. (Copenhagen Statens Museum for Kunst, Galleria Borghese, Rome, Palazzo Doria Pamphili, Rome ) In his nocturnes usually serves the representation of a point source of light (eg a candle ) to generate the light-dark effect. This chiaroscuro effect is produced in Heimbach's painting " Nocturnal Banquet" (Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna) by numerous light sources.
