Wolfgang Müller-Wiener

Wolfgang Müller- Wiener ( born May 17, 1923 in Friedrichswerth ( Thuringia), † March 25, 1991 in Istanbul ) was a German architectural historian.

After an apprenticeship as a carpenter, he studied from 1948 to 1951 at the Technical University of Karlsruhe architecture and received his PhD in 1954 on the issue of development of industrial construction in Baden. From 1962 to 1967 he was the second director of the German Archaeological Institute in Cairo and headed during this time the excavations of Abu Mena in Alexandria. After his habilitation in 1965 at the Technical University of Karlsruhe, he was in 1967 a full professor of architectural history at the Technische Hochschule Darmstadt. In 1976 he was elected as the first director of the German Archaeological Institute, Istanbul Department. From 1974 until his retirement in 1988, he headed the excavations at Miletus, where he examined himself three Hellenistic temple and Heroa with Berthold Weber and the early Christian buildings. In his honor, the Gästetrackt DAI Istanbul Wolfgang Müller -Wiener college was called.
