Wolfgang Neumann

Wolfgang Neumann ( born June 20, 1945 in Waiern, Austria, grew up in Germany ) is one of the most important German Wagner singers ( heroic tenor ). Only a few heroes tenors, it's like he managed to keep the heavy heroic roles of Richard Wagner nearly three decades in the active repertoire.

His repertoire includes mainly the big tenor roles in the operas of Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss' which he sings at the National Theatre Mannheim and with whom he has performed in the most important opera houses in the world ( German Opera Berlin, Bavarian State Opera, Paris Opera, Royal Opera House, Vienna State Opera, Teatro alla Scala, the Metropolitan Opera, Bayreuth Festival ). At the Met in New York he has appeared several times as Siegfried ( Siegfried, Götterdämmerung ) and in 2001 in the opening premiere as Drum Major ( Wozzeck ) and later as Aegisthus ( Elektra ).

He studied singing with Erwin Röttgen in food and fuel Friedrich, Ulrich and Wolfgang Rapp Bständig in Duisburg. In the following years he had engagements as a baritone in Rendsburg and Oberhausen, but then went through a change of subject for tenor and debuted in 1971 at the tenors at the Stadttheater Bielefeld in the role of Max in " Freischütz". In 1978 he moved to the city of Augsburg Theater. Since 1980 he has been a first heroic tenor to the ensemble of the National Theatre Mannheim. Guest performance contracts combine it with the State Operas of Munich (since 1981), Hamburg ( since 1982) and Vienna (since 1982).

His guest appearances justified particularly his reputation as a Wagner Performer: He kicked at the Theatre " La Monnaie " in Brussels, Zurich Opera House, at the Opera of Oslo (1981 in the Norwegian premiere of Wagner's " Tristan und Isolde " in the male title role ) at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Teatro San Carlos Lisbon, at the Teatro Liceu Barcelona (including the first performance of Schoenberg's "Moses und Aron "), in the operas of Dallas, Santiago de Chile, Monte Carlo, the Teatro Comunale Bologna, Marseille, at the Teatro Bellini, Catania, at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and at the Teatro Comunale Firenze in Florence. In 1988, debuted at the Metropolitan Opera in the role of Siegfried in the Ring of the Nibelung.

In 1990, he appeared at the Teatro Colón in concert performances of Wagner's " Rienzi " in the title role of, 1989, he took over at the Munich Opera Festival in the role of Cardinal Albrecht in " Mathis der Maler " by Paul Hindemith. In 1994 he sang at the State Theatre in Karlsruhe the Siegfried in the Ring Cycle, at the Bayreuth Festival from 1995 to Tannhäuser, he who also presented at the Leipzig Opera, continues in 1995 at the Vienna State Opera, the Aron in "Moses und Aron " by Schoenberg and 1996/1997 at the Saarland State theater Walther von Stolzing in Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. On 30 July 2010 he was adopted in Mannheim National Theatre after a performance of Götterdämmerung as an ensemble member in retirement. In this performance, he designed at the age of 65 years the role of Siegfried after he had three days earlier still interprets the role of the young Siegfried in the opera of the same name. He is now on only working freelance.

His concert repertoire includes mainly tasks in works such as Arnold Schoenberg's " Gurrelieder " or the " Song of the Earth " by Gustav Mahler.
