Wolfgang of the Palatinate

Wolfgang von der Pfalz, called the Elder ( born October 31, 1494 in Heidelberg, † April 2, 1558 in Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz) from the family of Wittelsbach was a Count Palatine of Neumarkt and governor of Upper Palatinate.

Life

Wolfgang was a son of the Elector Philipp of the Palatinate (1448-1508) from his marriage to Margaret (1456-1501), daughter of Duke Louis IX. of Bavaria- Landshut. Wolfgang, intended for the clerical career, was first canon of Augsburg, Würzburg and Speyer and since 1515 Rector Magnifikus the University of Wittenberg. In 1524 Wolfgang resigned to the lay state.

Wolfgang, since 1522 German Teutonic Knights, in 1524 received the teaching load Neumarkt and 1544 was governor of the Upper Palatinate to Amberg. He was a friend and supporter of Sciences and died unmarried and childless. He was interred in the Holy Ghost Church in Heidelberg.
