Wolfgang Rindler

Wolfgang Rindler ( born May 18, 1924 in Vienna) is an American theoretical physicist who deals with the theory of relativity.

Life

Rindler was the son of a lawyer (the family lived in Vienna on the Dominikanerbastei, where the firm his father was ). He fled as a Jew, 1938 ( the so-called Kindertransport ) from the Nazis to England. He studied at Liverpool University and his PhD at Imperial College in London. He was then in the U.S. in 1956 at Cornell University and in 1963 at the then newly formed Southwest Center for Advanced Studies, later the University of Texas at Dallas, where he is still (2009) Professor. He has been a visiting professor at King's College London (1961 /62), at the University La Sapienza in Rome (1968 /69), at the University of Vienna (1975, 1987), at Cambridge University (Churchill College, 1990).

In the ART, he introduced the concept of the event horizon and is known for the Rindler coordinates in Minkowski space ( to describe uniformly accelerated motion ). He wrote a well-known textbook theory of relativity. With Roger Penrose he examined the spinor and Twistorformalismus in relativity theory. Next he dealt with cosmology, for example, the question of the validity of Mach's principle.

He is a foreign member of the Academy of Sciences in Turin and in 1998 an honorary member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

Rindler force

The Austrian physicist Grumiller named 2010 after Rindler the concept of Rindler force - as an extension of general relativity, this would be a constant force acting between two objects independent of their distance.
