Wolfgang Schmieder

Wolfgang Schmieder (* May 29, 1901 in Bromberg, Province of Posen, † 8 November 1990 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German librarian and musicologist.

Schmieder studied musicology, literature and art history at the University of Heidelberg, where he received his doctorate in 1927 and until 1930 worked as an assistant at the Institute for Musicology. In 1931 he passed the examination librarian in Leipzig and then worked as a librarian at the Library of the TH Dresden. From 1933 to 1942 he was an archivist and music librarian from the publisher Breitkopf & Härtel in Leipzig. From 1942 until his retirement in 1963 worked on the City and University Library in Frankfurt am Main, since 1946 as head of the music department of newly born. Then he lived until his death in Freiburg im Breisgau.

Schmieder is primarily known for the created by him Bach - Werke-Verzeichnis ( BWV ), which he created 1946-1950, in which he cataloged the works of Johann Sebastian Bach. The Bach - Werke-Verzeichnis has since become virtually a global standard for musicians and lovers.
