Wolfgang Schweickard

Wolfgang Schweickard ( born October 16, 1954 in Aschaffenburg ) is a German linguist and lexicographer.

Life and work

Schweickard studied Romance languages ​​and in 1985 received his doctorate at the University of Mainz. 1990 saw his Habilitation at the University of Trier. 1990-93 he was professor of Romance Translation Studies at the University of the Saarland, 1992-93, he was chairman of the Department of Language and Literature and a member of the Senate of the University of Saarland. He was appointed professor of Romance Linguistics to Jena in 1993, where he became very busy: 1993-95, he was the founding director of the Institute of Romance Studies at the Friedrich -Schiller- University Jena, 1995-99 Member of the Senate, 1996-97 Vice Dean of the Faculty of Arts, 1997-99 Vice-Rector of the University of Jena. In September 2001, he went back to the Saarland University as a professor of Romance Philology and 2004-05 was dean of the Faculty of Arts II

Since 2004 Schweickard member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz, since 2011 member of the Italian National Academy, the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, and since 2013 member of the Accademia della Crusca. In 2004 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Bari.

Schweickards work focuses in the field of historical romance languages ​​and lexicography. He is co-editor of the Journal of Romance Philology and the Yearbook Lexicographica. Ongoing projects include the Deonomasticon Italicum (DI ), the Lessico Etimologico Italiano ( LEI) (together with Max Pfister ) and the Dictionnaire des langues étymologique Romance ( Derom ) ( with Eva Buchi ).
