Wolfram Hoepfner

Wolfram Hoepfner ( born March 16, 1937 in Breslau) is a German classical archaeologist and architectural historian.

Wolfram Hoepfner simultaneously studied at the Free University of Berlin, Classical Archaeology, and at the Technical University of Berlin architecture. In 1965 he received his doctorate on the subject of Heraclea Pontica. A history of building investigation and obtained the Dr.- Ing degree. He then became an assistant to Ernst Heinrich. He participated in excavations in Alzey under the direction of Wilhelm Unverzagt, in the Kerameikos in Athens (Dieter Oly and Gottfried Gruben ), Persia (Heinz Luschey ), Bithynia and in Commagene ( Friedrich Karl Dörner ) part. 1965/66 he spent a year traveling scholarship from the German Archaeological Institute ( DAI). For the DAI he was also from 1966 in his department in Athens operates. From 1973 he was head of the newly formed Architecture Unit at the headquarters of the German Archaeological Institute in Berlin and the second Director of the DAI headquarters. 1975 Hoepfner habilitation at the Technical University of Berlin, where he was appointed professor in 1980. In 1988 he was appointed Professor of Ancient Architectural History at the Free University Berlin. In the winter semester 2001/ 02 Wolfram Hoepfner was given emeritus status.

Excavations led the ordinary member of the DAI to Greece and Asia Minor. With Ernst- Ludwig Schwandner, Sotiris Dakaris and K. Gravani he headed the excavations at Kassope. With Schwandner he also heads the research project " Living in the classical polis ." Hoepfner is considered an expert on the architecture of the Late Classic, especially the academic buildings, for the late Hellenistic architecture and for the topography of ancient Rhodes.
