Wonderboom Nature Reserve

The Wonderboom ( Afrikaans, German " miracle tree ") is a more than 1,000 -year-old fig tree (Ficus salicifolia ) in the north of Pretoria in South Africa.

Its special feature is that its drooping branches have formed at the points where they touch the ground new roots, so that a circle has formed by " daughter tribes ". The process has continued. The original strain, which has a diameter of 5.5 meters, is today surrounded by twelve other tribes. Overall, the tree has a diameter of 50 to 60 meters and a height of 23 meters - unusual for this species which is rarely more than ten meters otherwise.

The Wonderboom grows at the northern foot of the Magaliesberg mountain range, about 500 meters east of the point where they are crossed by the Apies River. Around the tree is a small nature reserve, the Wonderboom Nature Reserve.

His name has the tree since 1836 when he was discovered by Voortrekkers under Andries Hendrik Potgieter.
