Attractions

  • The city has a 2004 restored tidal mill. This is one of only four of its kind in the UK, to one of the oldest, because it is there first documented in 1170. At that time it was run by Augustinian monks. In 1536 it passed to King Henry VIII, and in 1564 Queen Elizabeth I gave it to Thomas Hintlesham. This founded in 1577 the still existing Woodbridge School.
  • East of Woodbridge is Sutton Hoo, a number grassy grave mounds, in which a ship grave from the year 625 was with rich offerings found in 1939. Maybe it is the grave of the Anglo- Saxon king Raedwald of East Anglia.
