World Book Day

World Book and Copyright Day (short World Book Day, World Book and Copyright Day English ) on 23 April 1995 a world furnished by UNESCO holiday for reading, for books, for the culture of the written word and also to the rights of their authors.

Date

The date of April 23 goes back to the St. George's Day. It refers to the Catalan tradition, the feast day of the Holy people of St. George and roses to give away books. Also, drop the (presumed ) birth and the date of death of William Shakespeare, the death days of Miguel de Cervantes and the Catalan writer Josep Pla and the birthday of the Icelandic Nobel laureate Halldór Laxness on this date; being but to note that Shakespeare and Cervantes, although at the same date (23 April 1616), but not on the same day, died. At that time was reckoned in England yet with the Julian calendar, while in Spain was already the Gregorian calendar. Thus Shakespeare died ten days later than Cervantes.

The day of the book in Germany

Sant Jordi ( Saint George ) is the patron saint of Catalonia. At Sant Jordi, April 23, the day of lovers and the day of the book is traditionally celebrated in Catalonia. In all Catalan towns booksellers offer their wares for sale at bargain prices ( around 10 per cent discount) at street stalls. Man buys books for themselves or gifted his friends with a book. As a token of esteem and affection of the man pouring that day his wife, ( patents ) children, his girlfriend etc. a red rose and the women give the men a book. Many Catalan companies give their active and their already retired employees for this day book vouchers.

The Day of the Book in Britain and Ireland

On April 23 books vouchers are there distributed to the children, which they can exchange it for the 10 special books that appear separately on this day, can only be bought on the day and correspond to the voucher value. This value is 1 pound in the UK and € 1.50 in Ireland. In addition, many schools use this day to sell books.
