World Meteorological Organization

The World Meteorological Organization (English World Meteorological Organization, WMO short, Spanish and French abbreviation: OMM ) is a specialized agency of the United Nations. It is the organ sets the tone in matters of meteorology, relating to the status and behavior of the Earth's atmosphere, its interaction with the oceans, the climate created by them, and the resulting distribution of water resources. The WMO has 191 members in the form of states and territories. Its headquarters is in Geneva, Switzerland.

Objectives

The WMO is

  • Worldwide cooperation in the establishment of networks of weather stations for meteorological, hydrological and other geophysical observations that are relevant meteorological support, and the establishment and maintenance of centers that provide meteorological and related services, to encourage;
  • The establishment and maintenance of systems for the rapid exchange of meteorological data and related information is of benefit;
  • Promote standardization of meteorological and related observations and ensure the uniform publication of observations and statistics;
  • The application of meteorology to aviation, shipping, water problems, agriculture and other anthropogenic activities ahead;
  • Promote activities in the field of operational hydrology and promote close cooperation between meteorological and hydrological services;
  • Research and training in meteorology and - if necessary - to strengthen in related fields and assist in the coordination of the international aspects of such research and training projects;

Their "vision" is to provide global expertise and international cooperation in weather, climate, hydrology and water resources and related environmental areas in order to contribute about the safety and well-being of people around the world as well as the economic benefit of all nations.

History

The WMO was founded in 1873 from the 1950 International Meteorological Organization forth (English International Meteorological Organization, IMO). Its founding convention came into force on 23 March 1950. The WMO is the United Nations since 1951, the professional organization for meteorology ( weather and climate ), operational hydrology and related geophysical sciences. 1979 organized by the WMO in Geneva, the first Climate Change Conference ( February 12 to 23 ).

Since 2005, the Climate Change Conference at the meeting of the members of the Kyoto Protocol has been amended (Meeting of the Parties to the Protocol, MOP) (the only international legally binding instrument of climate policy).

Since the growing evidence that global warming (observed since the 20th century rise in the average temperature of the lower atmosphere and the oceans ) is anthropogenic, and the consequences of global warming are scientifically studied, efforts are those by climate policy measures ( for example, the 2 -degree target ) to slow down.

Structure

The work of the WMO is divided into ten scientific and technical programs, each consisting of subroutines. The most important program is the World Weather Watch Programme ( WWWP ), which draws on more than 10,000 weather stations around the world and develops standards for the measurement, the exchange and processing of meteorological data.

Send the WMO Member countries authorized experts in a " Commission on Infrastructure " ( Commission for Basic Systems), vote every two years had become necessary technical changes ( data structuring, data communication protocols, shortcut keys ) with each other. After appropriate unification of these innovations in the WMO manuals are made generally available 306 and 386. The last meeting took place in Geneva.
