List of specialized agencies of the United Nations

The specialized agencies of the United Nations ( United Nations Specialized Agencies english ) are legally, organizationally and financially independent international organizations, which are connected by closed pursuant to Article 63 of the Charter international agreement with the United Nations. The cooperation of these organizations with the United Nations and to each other is coordinated by the Economic and Social Council.

At present ( 2013) are the following 17 organizations UN agencies:

  • Technical organizations Universal Postal Union (UPU, Eng. UPU) in Bern ( Switzerland )
  • World Meteorological Organization (WMO ) in Geneva ( Switzerland )
  • International Civil Aviation Organization ( ICAO) in Montreal (Canada)
  • International Maritime Organization (IMO ) in London ( UK)
  • International Telecommunication Union ( ITU) in Geneva ( Switzerland )
  • Social, cultural, or humanitarian field International Labour Organization ( ILO, Eng. ILO) in Geneva ( Switzerland )
  • World Health Organization ( WHO) in Geneva ( Switzerland )
  • The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization ( UNESCO) in Paris ( France)
  • The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO ) in Vienna ( Austria )
  • Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations ( FAO) in Rome ( Italy)
  • World Tourism Organization (UNWTO ) in Madrid ( Spain)
  • World Intellectual Property Organization ( WIPO) in Geneva ( Switzerland )

Until its dissolution in 1952 was also the International Refugee Organization (IRO ) in Geneva ( Switzerland ), a specialized agency of the United Nations.

In addition, other organizations cooperate in international contractual basis closely with the United Nations, but not based on the relevant agreements Article 63 of the Charter, so that they are not specialized agencies; they are considered related organizations ( engl. related Organizations) respectively. These are:

  • World Trade Organization ( WTO) in Geneva ( Switzerland )
  • International Atomic Energy Agency ( IAEA) in Vienna ( Austria )
  • Preparatory Commission for the Organization of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBTO PrepCom ) in Vienna ( Austria )
  • Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons ( OPCW) in The Hague (Netherlands)
