World Water Forum

The World Water Forum is a forum founded in 1997, which deals with raising awareness of water supply issues and the promotion of water management on the political and social level.

History

Since 1997, all three -yearly World Water Forum was initiated by the World Water Council (World Water Council ), a think tank founded in 1996 under its president, Mahmoud Abu Zeid, Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation. The World Water Council to include 300 representatives from industry, government departments, academia, international financial institutions, the UN and local governments. Among the founders of the World Water Council include the directors of international companies, such as the multinational Suez. The World Water Forum is not an official intergovernmental body. The fifth World Water Forum was held from 16th to 19th March, 2009 Istanbul. The sixth forum will take place from 12 to 17 March 2012 in Marseille instead.

Events

I Marrakech 1997

The first World Water Forum was held in Marrakech in 1997.

II The Hague 2000

In March 2000, 5,700 participants gathered in The Hague to the Second World Water Forum. In the final declaration of access to water is explained as a basic need. Thus, access to water is according to critics, no human right but a commodity.

III Kyoto 2003

From 16 to 23 March 2003, the Third World Water Forum held in Kyoto, Shiga and Osaka. In fresh water, the future of the water supply of the world's population has been discussed here several thousand participants. In the media, this event took place whether the dominant events of the third Gulf War, only little response.

IV Mexico City 2006

In 2006, the Fourth World Water Forum (4th World Water Forum IV Foro Mundial del Agua ) was held to 22 March in Mexico City from 16. With over 19,800 participants, it was a big challenge for Mexico. In its final document was not set to the demand for a human right to drinking water. Another important issue, which the 4th World Water Forum provided a platform that was the subject of privatization.

V Istanbul 2009

In 2009 the fifth World Water Forum was held to 22 March in Istanbul on 16. Subjects were, for example, improve drinking water supplies. The human right to water, which some states had demanded, was not accepted.

VI Marseille 2012

The theme of this edition, which takes place from 12th to 17th March 2012, "Time for solutions " (Eng. "Time for Solutions "). Are expected than 25,000 visitors and more than 140 countries of the world will be represented. The World Water Council pursues this three strategies: Ensuring the well-being of all, the contribution to economic development and the preservation of the blue planet.
