Worthington Whittredge

(Thomas) Worthington Whittredge ( May 22nd in 1820 in Springfield, Ohio, † February 25, 1910 in Summit, New York) was an American painter and is considered a member of the " Hudson River School ".

Whittredge came in 1849 from Cincinnati via Paris to Dusseldorf. Here he first met Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze. This helped him to find his way in the city. Later he was Emanuel Leutze for the painting " Washington Crossing the Delaware " both as George Washington as well as helmsman model.

He remained until 1854 in Dusseldorf and was in contact with other artists, such as Karl Friedrich Lessing and Albert Bierstadt. During this time he undertook with Lessing on a study trip to the Harz. Impressed by the Rhine landscape, he used props in his paintings successfully sold in America. Later he traveled up the Rhine through Switzerland to Rome, where in the United States, he worked for four years until his return.

As one of the leading landscape painters of the USA Whittredge combined influences of his time in Dusseldorf with those of the " Hudson River School " and the painting of Barbizon. He was praised for his accurate drawing his image structure and the sensitivity of its coloring.

Whittredge said of his artistic career: "Art is universal. It knows no country and no borders. "
