Wulfnoth Cild

Wulfnoth Cild ( 1000 ) was possibly the father of Godwin of Wessex, whose father was certainly Wulfnoth. Since Wulfnoth was a common name, it is likely that it is the same person. He was the grandfather of King Harold Godwinson.

He was a nobleman in Sussex, whose possessions ( like a Testament King Athelstan reported ) were in Compton. Supposedly he came even of King Ethelred of Wessex, the elder brother King Alfred the Great from. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle reports on an incident when Wulfnoth under the rule of the Unfinished Aethelreds with 20 ships of the royal fleet devastated the south coast and Earl Brithnic, who had tried to stop him killed. Wulfnoth was then banished, while his son Godwin was allowed to stay in England.
