Xabier Azkargorta

Francisco Xabier Azkargorta Uriarte ( born September 26, 1953 in Azpeitia, Basque Country, Spain ), better known by his nickname Xabier Azkargorta, is a former Spanish football coach and player, who is Bolivian national team coach since August 2012.

Biography

The native Basque began his career in the youth team of Real Sociedad San Sebastian and transferred in 1971 to Athletic Bilbao, where he spent his entire professional career. This he had to quit in 1977 due to a serious injury in his right knee. His biggest success was winning the Bilbao Copa del Rey 1973.

Then the well-known by the nickname El Bigotón Azkargota worked as manager of various club and national before he moved into management for the first time in 2003.

After he had supervised between 1978 and 1980 the youth team of the Basque CD Lagun Onak, for the next two years the also located in the Basque Country CD Aurrera de Vitoria and in the 1982/83 season the Catalan club Gimnàstic de Tarragona, it was 1983 when RCD Espanyol the first time a coaching job at a first division offered. He subsequently worked for Real Valladolid, Sevilla FC and at CD Tenerife, he left Spain to take care of the national teams from Bolivia ( 1993-94 ) and Chile ( 1995-96 ). He was then committed by the Japanese first division side Yokohama Marinos, which he has edited in the 1997/98 season.

One of his greatest successes as a coach was the World Cup participation of Bolivia in 1994. During the qualification round Bolivia had the big favorites Brazil in the amount of La Paz defeated 2-0 in the final only scored one point less than the group winners Brazil. In addition, Bolivia scored 22 goals (of which only 14 in the two games against Venezuela ), and thus two more than the Brazilians. In the last preliminary round group match at the 1994 World Cup Bolivia met on the way Azkargortas native Spain and lost with 1:3.

In 2003, el Bigotón Azkargorta a contract with Real Madrid and was sent to Mexico to look after there newly built sports school of Real Madrid. Two years later he was offered the Mexican club Chivas Guadalajara during the Apertura 2005 at the office of the head coach his first team. There Azkargorta had only a three-month stint. He led the team through the last twelve games of the tournament in the winter season 2005/ 06, however, in which this was achieved only eleven points and he was fired immediately after the season.

Real Madrid, who had completed at that time just a cooperation agreement with some Chinese clubs, Azkargorta brought back on board and entrusted him with the sporty line of Beijing Guoan.

Since July 2008, Xabier Azcargorta was as sporting director of FC Valencia under contract.

In August 2012, he again took over the post of the Bolivian national team coach.
