Xarnego

Charnego or Xarnego is a Catalan term, which means as much as foreigners. It can be compared approximately with the ancient Greek " Barbaros ".

Formation

Charnego designated during the 20th century from a region nichtkatalanischsprachigen immigrant Spaniards or their descendants in Catalonia, mostly from Castile, Extremadura and Andalusia. The term originally meant as a foreign term pejoratively, became the Geusenwort, ie the originally pejorative foreign name is now used as a proper name with pride.

Etymology

According to the Diccionario de la Lengua Española, the term charnego is due to the Catalan xarnego, which in turn originates from the Castilian lucharniego. The perro lucharniego is the dog that is trained to hunt at night. This is etymologically obscured by the fact that it is not readily seen that actually lucharniego ( "on the road at night," meaning) comes from nocharniego.
