Xenon hexafluoride is one of the few chemical compounds from the group of noble gas compounds. It is a colorless solid.
Production
All xenon fluorides are prepared by the thermal or photochemical activation of xenon / fluorine mixtures. Which product is produced depends on the molar ratio and the reaction conditions (pressure, temperature). As xenon hexafluoride can be obtained by long-lasting heating of xenon difluoride XeF2 at 300 ° C and a pressure of 6 MPa.
Properties
Physical Properties
The molecule is in the gas phase in a distorted octahedral built. The structure according to VSEPR theory were applied to the base of the remaining lone pair a ψ - pentagonal- bipyramidal molecule. In the solid state is xenon ( VI ) fluoride from [ XeF5 ] - and F - ions.
Chemical Properties
Metal fluorides xenon ( VI ) fluoride reacts to Fluoroxenaten.
Xenon hexafluoride is hydrolyzed gradually to form Xenontrioxid.
