Xenonhexafluoroplatinat ( IV) ( XePtF6 ) is a compound of the noble gas xenon, the noble metal is platinum and the non-metal fluoride.

History

Xenonhexafluoroplatinat the first noble gas compound produced was. It was discovered in 1962 by the American chemist Neil Bartlett. The synthesis was initiated by the observation that platinum hexafluoride PtF6 with molecular oxygen O2 connection O2 PtF6 - forms. Since oxygen and xenon have similar ionization energies, the reaction should also be possible with xenon.

Properties

Xenonhexafluoroplatinat is a mixture of different compounds. This Xenon has always been the oxidation state II Some of these compounds are XeF PtF6, XeF Pt2F11 and Xe2F3 PtF6 -. Like most noble gas compounds Xenonhexafluoroplatinat is very unstable and can therefore be isolated only at very low temperatures. When heated it decomposes immediately in xenon and platinum hexafluoride.
