Xinfengjiang Reservoir

The Xinfeng Reservoir ( also Xinfengjiang or Hsinfengkiang ) is a large dam on the river in China Xinfeng Jiang (also Xinfeng He) and is located in Heyuan City, Guangdong. Another name for the Xinfeng Reservoir is Wanlu, English: Evergreen Lake ( Evergreen Lake ) because the plants are green here in the subtropical southern China throughout the year.

The lake is located very nicely landscaped and has more than 360 islands. The water is of very good quality and suitable for drinking. The water surface is given in two different sources with 370 or 461 km ².

Shut-off

The 1960 -built shut-off of the dam is a 105 m high buttress dam. In a hydroelectric plant has a power output of 442.5 MW is achieved.

Induced seismicity

While the reservoir was dammed, there was a series of earthquakes up to a magnitude (magnitude ) 6.1, which go back to the effect of the reservoir and therefore are considered as induced seismicity.

On October 20 In 1959 with the filling of the reservoir. In November, there were several minor earthquakes. In May 1960, the water was high in 81 m ( above sea level). It was followed by three to four earthquakes of magnitude 3.1. On July 18, 90 m were achieved and an M = 4.3 strong earthquake occurred. On March 19, 1962, when the water level reached 110.5 m had, there was an earthquake with M = 6.1 with an epicenter 1.1 km below the dam, in which several houses were destroyed. After this earthquake cavities were filled in the foundation with concrete for safety. This and other measures resulted in the dam to a calculated safety against earthquakes up to magnitude 9.5.
