The Extended Module ( XM ) is a file format for music files that have been created with a tracker. The file format was introduced with Fast Tracker II. It allows instruments with volume and panning envelopes, and a simple sample - compression.

The XM format is in contrast to the MOD format of Protracker not precisely documented in important details. Programmers of display programs often looked into the source code of other player programs.

Use

Some computer games Epic Games such as Unreal, Unreal Tournament or Ion Storm's Deus Ex used, inter alia, the XM format, encapsulated in a " UMX " Container format supported by Galaxy Sound Engine.

Tracker

Modern tracker can read the XM format not only save but also include the Milky Tracker, BeRoTracker or Mod Plug Tracker.
