Yagyū Shinkage-ryū

Yagyū Shinkage - ryū (Japanese柳生 新 阴 流, dt " Yagyū New Shadow School" ) is one of the best known traditions of Japanese sword fighting. The name referred Yagyū the family, took over the leadership of this school late 16th century and they significantly shaped.

History

The tradition of Yagyū Shinkage - ryū goes back to Kamiizumi Ise -no- Kami. This learned Kage - ryū with its founder Aisu Ikkosai, and was also well versed in both the Kashima Shinryu and the Katori Shinto - ryū. From these experiences, he created his own school, Shinkage - ryū. The Yagyū family came in contact with Kamiizumi than Yagyū Muneyoshi suffered a bitter defeat in a duel with a student Kamiizumis. Then Muneyoshi asked to be allowed to be a student of Kamiizumi. He was adopted and brought it to the point where he was named by Kamiizumi as his successor in 1565. Together with his son Munenori Yagyū succeeded Muneyoshi to establish his school fencing as the official school of the Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. The Yagyū family created a fencing instructor away for the Shoguns of the Tokugawa clan over three generations.

His son Yagyū Munenori was a teacher until the 3rd Tokugawa Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu. After Tokugawa daimyo of Owari became the Yoshinao -han, based in Nagoya, he was trained from 1615 Muneyoshis grandson Yagyū Toshiyoshi (柳生 利 厳), bringing the Yagyū Shinkage - ryū in the Owari Yagyū Shinkage - ryū (尾 张柳生 新 阴 split流) in Nagoya, and the remaining in Edo Edo Yagyū Shinkage - ryū (江 戸 柳生 新 阴 流).

The great-grandson Jubei Mitsuyoshi Yagyū, who continued the tradition is compared to Japan with Miyamoto Musashi. The former increased the political influence of his school at the court of the Shogun and is surrounded by legends and sagas.

Shinkage - ryū is one of the first sword schools that used a fukuro shinai as practice weapon that allows to train with quite hard contact without hurting the partner there.

Focus of the curriculum form the sword techniques, which include both Odachi, and Kodachi Nito. In addition, often the Batto -jutsu techniques of Yagyū Seigo - ryu taught, as well as a smaller number of techniques with the Jō.
