Jamal 402 (Russian Ямал -402 ) is a commercial communications satellite of the Russian communications satellite operator Gazprom Space Systems.

It was launched on December 8, 2012 at 13:13 UTC clock with a Proton-M rocket from the launch site 200/39 in the Kazakh Baikonur. After 9 minutes and 15 seconds of flight time, the upper stage Briz- M parted with the satellite of the third stage of the proton. About nine hours after the start, the engine of the upper stage switched in the fourth and final ignition 240 seconds too early, causing the satellite failed to reach its planned orbit. Roscosmos said on December 9, 2012, that the systems of Jamal 402 function normally and to plan the satellite with the help of his manufactured by EADS Astrium dual fuel engine S400 in a nearly circular orbit around the Earth to bring. This maneuver was provisionally closed on 15 December 2012 after a fourth firing stage and placed the satellite in the vicinity of its target orbit.

The three -axis stabilized satellite is equipped with 46 Ku- band transponders and will be supplied with its four fixed and one steerable beams on the position of 55 degrees East, parts of Africa, Europe, parts of the Middle East and Russia with a wide range of communication services and at the same services from Astra 1F to take over. It was built by an order of 28 May 2010 on the basis of the satellite bus Spacebus 4000C3 by Thales Alenia Space and has a design life of 15 years. Due to the increased power demand and consequently fuel consumption, however, are expected to reduce the lifetime estimated eleven years.
