The Yangon International Airport ( IATA: RGN, ICAO: VYYY ) is located in Mingaladon, 15 kilometers north of downtown Yangon, and is the main international airport of Myanmar. The airport was built in 1947 by the Municipal Airport Authority Calcutta on a former airfield from the Second World War. The ruling military government has neglected the airport but more and more, so that it no longer met the international requirements.

A renovation program that was launched in April 2003 to life, led to a new terminal and an extension of the airstrip were built on 3414 meters. The new terminal was opened in May 2007. Now, the airport can handle up to 5 aircraft per hour and 2.7 million passengers per year. A new path for heavier aircraft is still under construction.

The old terminal is exclusively for domestic flights, the new terminal for international flights.

Near Rangoon to 2018, the new Hanthawaddy Airport arise with a capacity of twelve million passengers annually.

The new terminal

The new terminal was part of an extensive renovation program, which was taken in April 2003 attack, and was completed in May 2007. In the new terminal 900 arriving and departing passengers can be handled simultaneously. The extended from 2467 m to 3414 m runway now allows a landing of a Boeing 747-400. The cost for the renovation and construction was about 30 million U.S. dollars to meet the IATA standards of service and the ICAO safety standards. Among the other notable features of the terminal include:

  • A separate floor for arriving and departing passengers to reduce traffic congestion
  • The automated baggage handling system with integrated check-in system
  • , A Boeing to unload four air bridges, which are capable of 747
  • Special lounges for use by government officials and businessmen
  • Two-storey car park with space for 340 vehicles
