Yannis Tsarouchis

Giannis Tsarouchis (Greek Γιάννης Τσαρούχης, born January 13, 1910 in Piraeus, † July 20, 1989 in Athens ) was a Greek painter and stage designer.

Tsarouchis studied 1929-1935 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Athens. On the side he took private lessons with the great Greek artist Fotis Kontoglou who introduced him to the art of Byzantine painting. After his studies he visited Istanbul before he traveled to Italy to Paris. In Italy and France, he came into contact with the works of the Renaissance and Impressionism and met Henri Matisse and Alberto Giacometti know.

He had his first exhibition in 1938 in Greece. After the Second World War was followed by numerous international exhibitions, including London, Paris and New York. In 1956 he was nominated for the Guggenheim Prize. In 1958 he participated in the Venice Biennale. As was the dictatorship of the Colonels to power in 1967 in Greece, Tsarouchis left the country and settled in Paris. After the fall of the dictatorship, he returned to Greece. His house in Athens since 1982, a museum with works by the artist.
