Jarok (Russian Ярок ) is an island in the Laptev Sea, a marginal sea of the Arctic Ocean. The island lies in the mouth of the river Jana. Jarok is 38 km long and 26 km wide. On the island there are many swamps, lakes and sandbars.

The Yana delta, where the island is located, is an extensive wetland. There is a severe arctic climate with frequent storms and blizzards. For eight months of the year the water of Jana Delta is so dense frozen, that the island is connected to the mainland.

Administratively Jarok belongs to the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia ) of the Russian Federation.

History

The first known Europeans who explored the area, were the Russian traders Yakov Permyakov and his companion Merkury Wagin. They crossed in 1712 the frozen Jana Bay from the mouth of the river Jana to the Great Liakhov Island in the New Siberian Islands and explored the then unknown island group. On the way back Permyakov and Wagin were killed by mutinous members of the expedition.
