Yaşar Büyükanıt

Mehmet Yaşar Büyükanıt ( born September 1, 1940 in Istanbul) was from August 2006 to July 2008, the Turkish Chief of General Staff. He was the 25th commander of the army since the end of the Ottoman Empire. His successor as Chief of Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces had since August 16, 2008 İlker Başbuğ.

Life

Büyükanıt graduated 1959, the Military School in Erzincan and 1961, the Academy of Land Forces before he attended the Infantry School until 1963. His family is from Gaziantep. Between 1983 and 1986 he commanded the elite military school Kuleli in Istanbul. From 1986 to 1988 he commanded the presidential guard. He was promoted to the rank of General in 1992. As a general, he was first secretary general of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and then for three years commander of the Military Academy. From August 30 2003 to August 30, 2004 Büyükanıt was commander of the Turkish First Army. Since 2004, he was up to his appointment as Chief of Staff of the Supreme Commander of the Land Forces.

Büyükanıt is married to Filiz Büyükanıt and the couple have a daughter.

Büyükanıt was awarded the Order of the following countries: Turkey, Italy, USA, Pakistan.
