Yearly Meeting

An annual meeting is an organizational unit of the Administrative Quakerism. It combines a rule, several so-called quarterly meetings among themselves; or different monthly meetings. In Germany, the quarterly meetings are called deviation from the usual practice, " District Assemblies ". Because Quakerism is traditionally marked in English, is spoken regardless of the local language and the " Yearly Meeting ".

History

The oldest annual meeting is called the " London Yearly Meeting " today "Britain Yearly Meeting ." It was founded in 1668th Relevant initiator of the foundation was the Quaker George Fox, who in 1666 began to travel across the country and to promote among the Quakers for it to set up the monthly meetings to provide the young movement on a stable basis.

A first national " annual general meeting " this was already available in 1658 in Bedfordshire. But this had no administrative character. This meeting was held at the home of John Croots, with the participation of George Fox.

1673 then " London Yearly Meeting " was given the task of all mutual assistance among the month meetings ( and quarterly meetings ) to coordinate. Previously this work was organized by Margaret Fell from Swarthmoor reverb. For this central task of the " Morning Meeting " Meeting for Sufferings or was created. To date, the Britain Yearly Meeting is the foremost annual meeting in Europe. The German Quäkergeschichte is closely linked to the Britain Yearly Meeting.

Tasks

In the early days the focus was the persecution of the Quakers to oppose and to coordinate relief efforts. In addition, mission trips were organized to continental Europe and coordinated. There were pamphlets and books printed and organized their distribution. An attempt was made through diplomatic channels, to take on the politics of the ruling influence in order to improve their own situation. In addition, the annual meeting of the identity and the disciplining inward served. The most important instrument for this was the development of a " breeding of living together " (now "order of coexistence " and English " Book of Discipline ").

Even today, a Quaker defined primarily on the "Book of Discipline" and the production and revision incumbent still each annual meeting. Especially in smaller annual meetings today is the personal encounter important part. Here there are great efforts to involve all age groups. The administrative work is only one part of the whole. At the annual meetings now not only delegates but also many interested ordinary members and interested non-members also meet.

The term " annual meeting " is sometimes not very clear and therefore misleading. Depending on the context, the term organizational unit, or the annual meeting of the members of the annual meeting.

Structure

From the original approach produces the monthly meetings completely autonomous ( Congregational ) are organized. They occupy their offices and even send delegates to the quarterly meeting to discuss with others also monthly meetings on common issues. These quarterly meetings to advise their part in the annual meeting. Each level has its own services and committees. All concentrations have a consultative and recommendatory primarily character. In the original idea and understanding of God leads the church without mediation of priests or pastors. Therefore the diagram is right, placed God above, including communities, followed by the quarter and annual meetings.
