Yehudit Naot

Yehudit Naot (Hebrew יהודית נאות; born April 4, 1944 in Kiryat Chaim, League of Nations Mandate for Palestine, † December 16, 2004 in Haifa, Israel) was an Israeli scientist, university teacher and politician.

Biography

She was born in Kiryat Haim in Haifa. She studied chemistry and biology at the Technion, Israel Institute of technology, and subsequently worked at the University. She was also appointed to a professorship. In 1975, she joined the Zionist, secular and liberal Shinui, which was founded in the wake of the Yom Kippur War in 1974. For Shinui she had long been active in local politics, including as mayor of Haifa in the years 1989 to 1991 and from 1993 to 1996.

She was from February 2003 to October 2004 Environmental Protection Minister. During her tenure she was diagnosed with cancer of the larynx, to which she eventually died.

Naot was married and had three children.
