Gelbbauchgirlitz ( Serinus flaviventris )

The Gelbbauchgirlitz ( Serinus flaviventris, in older literature also Serinops flaviventris ) is a species in the finch family. The species is occasionally kept as an ornamental bird in Europe.

Description

The Gelbbauchgirlitz reaches a body length of 13 to 14 inches. The male has a yellow and gray-green face drawing. The underside is completely yellow. The neck and the back is greenish- yellow with a dark dash. The elytra, the wings and tail are black with broad yellow seams. The female is marked clearly understated and has a predominantly gray plumage. On underside of the body there is only little yellow.

Lifestyle and dissemination

The nest of the Gelbbauchgirlitzes consists of three to four eggs. These have a light green color and often dark scribble. The nest is exclusively and incubated by the female brooded the nestlings only by the female. On feeding the nestlings, the male parent bird involved from about the eighth day of the nestlings. The nestling period lasts 18 days. After leaving the nest the young birds are fed for a few days just by the male.

The Gelbbauchgirlitz comes from South Africa prior to Angola. Its habitat is rich prairie bush.
