Serinus

European Serin ( Serinus serinus ), male

The genus of the European Serins ( Serinus ) belongs to the family of finches ( Fringillidae ). It is closely related to the genus of siskins ( Carduelis).

Internal system

Through DNA testing of the mitochondrial cytochrome b was found that the genus Serinus is closely related to the genus Carduelis. More Phylogenetic analyzes mitochondrial cytochrome b in 20 species of the genus Serinus based molecular clock with one in their analysis. The DNA dendrograms suggest that the genus Serinus first occurred in the Miocene to nine million years ago. The formation of species accordingly began two million years ago during the Pleistocene. On average, the divergence in the DNA of the nucleus among the various types of Serinus is approximately four percent. This value suggests a compared to other songbirds genera remarkably rapid spread of the species. In conclusion to phylogenetic dendrograms of most Carduelis and Serinus species shows that the spread radii of both genera are entangled in the development period and are not monophyletic. The first Serinus species occurred about half a million years after the Carduelis species.

These studies related to geographic and phenotypic records of the genus Serinus indicate five groups:

Recent studies of the mitochondrial cytochrome b of the genus Serinus sensu lato ( Amber inclusion of the putative genera Alario, Pseudochloroptila, Serinops, Ochrospiza, Dendrospiza and Crithagra ) represent two groups that:

Both groups are separated by Carduelis taxa from each other, as Serinus sensu lato is considered paraphyletic.
