The genus of the European Serins ( Serinus ) belongs to the family of finches ( Fringillidae ). It is closely related to the genus of siskins ( Carduelis).

Through DNA testing of the mitochondrial cytochrome b was found that the genus Serinus is closely related to the genus Carduelis. More Phylogenetic analyzes mitochondrial cytochrome b in 20 species of the genus Serinus based molecular clock with one in their analysis. The DNA dendrograms suggest that the genus Serinus first occurred in the Miocene to nine million years ago. The formation of species accordingly began two million years ago during the Pleistocene.
