Yisrael BaAliyah

Jisra'el ba - Aliya ( יִשְׂרָאֵל בעֲלִיָּה ) was a political party in Israel.

Meaning: עֲלִיָּה

The party was founded in 1996 by the refusenik Natan Sharansky. With another refusenik July Joel Edelstein they chose a party name that should show that their party is special: its chairman had all previously before they can enter into the prison in the policy. It represented the interests of Jewish immigrants from the former USSR. The word " aliyah " עֲלִיָּה Hebrew stand for both immigration and should therefore refer to this migration background. On the other hand, this word means also something like at the peak and should point to the life of the refuseniks and party founder, the first a low point in her life - had to live through before they were now allowed to be politically active - the prison in the USSR.

History

In elections in May 1996, the party won 5.7% of the vote and seven seats, and became the 6.stärkste party in the Knesset. They were part of the government led by Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud and received two ministerial posts: Sharansky became Minister of Industry and Trade, as Gem was Minister for Immigration.

On February 23, 1999, shortly before the Knesset elections in 1999, leaving Michael Nudelman uand Yuri star party " Jisra'el ba - Aliya " to a new party - Alija to setup, dealing with another Russian- later ethnic migrants Party association - Jisra'el Beiteinu.

2003, the party went on in the Likud.
