Yokozawa Shōgen

Yokozawa Shogen (Japanese横 沢 将 监) was born in the mid-16th century into a samurai family in the Sendai fief in Japan. He served the daimyo of Sendai, Date Masamune.

In September 1616 he went on the orders of Date Masamune with the Japanese warship San Juan Bautista to Mexico to his compatriot Hasekura Rokuemon return, who returned from an embassy from Europe.

The trip proved to be difficult and about 100 men died on the ship during the journey. You arrived in Acapulco in May 1617. He sent a letter and a number of products of Date Masamune, was baptized and received the baptismal name Don Alonzo Hacaldo.

The ship sailed in April 1618 a fourth time over the Pacific and came to the Philippines, where it was bought by the local Spanish authorities in order to strengthen the defense against Holland. While Luis Sotelo was in the Philippines because of the increasingly anti- Christian sentiment in Japan, Yokozawa Shogen traveled with Hasekura Rokuemon in August 1620 on a merchant ship to Japan.

After his return Yokozawa should have renounced the Christian faith and burned all the Christian possessions. Neither later life, nor the grave of Yokozawa are known.
