York Road tube station

York Road is a former underground station of the London Underground. It is on the Piccadilly Line between the stations of King's Cross St. Pancras and Caledonian Road, at the intersection of York Road (now York Way ) and Bingfield Street.

The opening of the station took place on December 15, 1906 as part of the commissioning of the former Great Northern, Piccadilly and Brompton Railway between Finsbury Park and Barons Court The station building was designed by Leslie Green in the typical " house style " of the Underground Electric Railways Company of London: blood-red glazed terracotta brick, large semicircular windows on the upper floor and toothed cornices. In contrast to most other stations on this route the two elevators leading directly to the platforms.

From the beginning, the station was only little used because it was in a poor, industrially shaped district. From 5 May, 1918, it was closed on Sundays, between May 4 and October 4, 1926 even completely. The final closing took place on 17 September 1932. Immediately north-east of the platforms was a track change. This plant was in operation until April 25, 1964. The signal box ( signal box ) is still seen from a moving train to Caledonian Road. The station building is still intact and is used by a private company.
