Yosef Porath

Joseph Porath (Hebrew יוסף פורת; born June 7, 1909 in Breslau as Heinz Foerder; † Ramot haSchawim, Israel in late 1996 ) was an Israeli chess master of German origin.

Porath was initially the name Heinz Foerder under which he attained some notoriety in the 1920s in Germany. In 1928, he participated as a representative of Germany at the Chess Olympiad in The Hague, as well as at the German championships in 1929 and 1931 in part, before he emigrated to Palestine in 1934. 1937 and 1940 he won the championship of Palestine. He took for Palestine at the Chess Olympiads in 1935 in Warsaw and in 1939 in Buenos Aires, where he won a gold medal for his individual profit ( with 9-1 = 4), still under the name Foerder part, but he changed it in Porath after founding of the state of Israel. 1953, 1957, 1959 and 1963 he won the championship of Israel. 1952, 1954, 1956, 1958, 1960, 1962, 1964, 1966 and 1968 he played for Israel at the Chess Olympiads. Porath 1964 won the zone tournament in Ulaanbaatar and qualified for the Interzonal in Amsterdam. Together with his compatriot Moshe Czerniak he received in 1952 awarded by the FIDE International Master title.
