Youssef Howayek

Youssef Saadallah Howayek (Arabic: يوسف حويك; Yousuf also Huwayyik, Hoyek, Hoayek, Hawayek ) ( born March 9, 1883 in Helta, † 1962 in Beirut ) was an Arab sculptor and painter from the city Helta in the north of modern-day Lebanon.

Life

Howayek family belonged to the Christian community of the Maronites. His father was a member of the Board Saadallah Howayek, his grandfather was a clergyman in the country. His uncle was the Archbishop and Patriarch Elias Peter Hoayek of Helta.

An unforgettable experience for the young man from the small town in the mountains of Lebanon was his arrival in the capital of European culture Rome. Then he moved to Paris, where he met the American -Lebanese poet and painter Khalil Gibran. From 1909 to 1910 both studied sculpture with Auguste Rodin. Later they were joined by the Lebanese writer Ameen Rihani.

Howayek began work of Dante Alighieri " The Divine Comedy " to translate into Arabic, but it is not known if he completed the work.

Others

As Youssef Howayek confessed in his diaries, on the work of Ernest Renan him Histoire des origines du has christianisme ( history of the beginnings of Christianity, 8 volumes, 1863-1883 ) exerted a great influence.

He also was one of the regulars at the meeting point of bohemian Paris, the Café du Dôme.
