Yuin people

The Yuin are a tribe of Aborigines on the South Coast of New South Wales. This tribe is divided into two groups, the Walbanga, the north of Narooma and the Dyiringanj (or Djiringanj ) who live south of Narooma to Bega and west of it to the heights of the Great Dividing Range, which form the boundary.

The land of Yuins ranged from Cape Howe to the Shoalhaven River and inland to the Great Dividing Range.

History

The number of Yuin 1788 was approximately 11,000 persons fell to the middle of the 19th century due to smallpox epidemics of 1789 and 1830 to 600, as well as by tribal wars and diseases that brought the European whalers with and against the Aborigines had no immunity.

Country

The Eurobodalla Shire Council signed in 1998 an agreement between the local Yuin over the rights to the land; and a memorandum of Bega, Eden, Merriman's Local Aboriginal Land Councils and the holders of native title and in 2001 was signed by the Bega Valley Shire Council.

On 6 May 2006, Yuin was the full title of the Gulaga and Biamanga National Park by the Government of New South Wales reconveyed. This land right in Gulaga National Park is held in a trust established by the Merriman and Wagonga Local Aboriginal Lands Council and is used by Biamanga of the Trust by Merriman and Bega Local Aboriginal Lands Council.

Significant places

The Yuin consider themselves the traditional owners of the Wallaga Lake Country. They organize the Umbarra Cultural Centre near this lake. The former Wallaga Lake National Park has risen in Gulaga National Park.

Applies Merriman Iceland in Wallaga Lake for the Yuin as a sacred place and on 25 November 1977, was the first place in New South Wales, which was declared a cultural heritage of the Aborigines. The island is part of the New South Wales National Park and Wildlife Service. The island is named after King Merriman, leader of the Yuin, who died in 1904. In this area are located on the Yuins two sacred mountains, the Mumballa and the 806 -meter-high Mount Gulaga. The Mumballa bulla Mountain is located in the center of Bega Valley Shire and was named in November 1973 by Jack Mumballa, who was an Elder ( tribal elder ) of the Yuin. The Mumbulla Mountain is the most significant and most central place in Biamanga National Park for ceremonies. Certain areas of the park can be used for ceremonies by both men and women of the Aborigines.

The Mount Dromedary, now called Mount Gulaga, located in Gulaga National Park and is considered by the Yuin as the ancestral place of their creators. Gulaga symbolizes the mother figure and provides the basis of the spiritual identity of the women and men of the Yuin.

Montague Iceland is known as the Yuin Barranguba. Barranguba had sons, Gulaga and Najanuga; Barranguba was the eldest son, and he was allowed to go to sea while Najanuga always had to stay with his mother.

The Yuin are also known as Yuwin, Djiringanj, Dyirringan, Jeringin or Juwin.

The Yuin belong to the family of languages ​​of the Pama - Nyungan. You have several dialects, the Djiringanj, Thaua, Walbanga, or Wandandian.
