The Yukpa (also Yucpa, Yu'pa ) or Yuko called, are Indians who. Both sides of the Sierra de Perijá, ie both in Colombia, such as living in Venezuela In Colombia, the name Yuko is still used even though this means enemy, the self-designation, however, is Yukpa.
History
The Spanish conquerors had driven the ancestors of Yupka forcibly from their land, most only last 20th century. During the dictatorship of Marcos Pérez Jiménez in the 1950s, the expropriation was particularly intense.
In the 1970s, the Yukpa descended from the schutzbietendem Perijá Mountains to settle in the land of their ancestors.
Settlements

The majority of their ancestral land is in the hands of predominantly white landowners. Many of the Yukpa demand the restoration of land rights from pre-colonial times.
In Venezuela, the Yukpa claim a contiguous region in the northwestern border state of Zulia, which is ruled by the right-wing opposition. The landowners and ranchers there have excellent relationships with policy and security agencies to secure their position of power. Entrepreneurs and transnational corporations want to exploit in the indigenous areas of extensive natural resources, and are supported by the opposition regional government, which assigns mining concessions without consulting the Yukpa. But also in charge of the national government in Caracas work with the corporations and ignore the self-determination rights of the indigenous people.
