Yule log (cake)

The Bûche de Noël [ byʃ d ( ə ) nɔɛl ], also Christmas Tree trunk, Christmas log, Julscheit or Bismarck oak called, is a traditional Christmas cake from France and other French speaking countries. There it is traditionally served as a dessert Christmas dinner. Meanwhile, it is baked and offered in many other countries.

Production

The Bûche de Noël consists of a rectangular sponge cake ( Genoise ), which is filled with chocolate butter cream and rolled up. One end ( sometimes both ) is cut off and placed laterally to indicate the appearance of a tree trunk. Similarly, the outer layer of cream is groove- like decorated to mimic the bark. Often mushrooms are added ( from marzipan or meringue ) and / or leaves and berries as decoration yet. Many variants of this traditional recipe exist, with brighter or mocha butter cream.

History

In France it was, as is usual in many European countries, to burn a Christmas (s ) Christmas log in the fireplace. When the large ovens disappeared, the tradition was modified: Instead of real tree trunks, the sweet Yule log was used, which blossomed into the Christmas tradition cake. 1879 is first mentioned in the " bûche de Noël ". However, one is not agreed whether the cake has been invented by a Lyon or Paris pastry chef.
