Yuri's Night

Yuri 's Night is an international celebration that takes place on April 12 each year. It serves to commemorate the first space flight of a human - that was April 12, 1961 Yuri Gagarin - and the first launch of a Space Shuttle (Columbia ) exactly 20 years later, April 12, 1981 In 2004, people celebrated in 34 countries. at more than 75 events at locations as diverse as Los Angeles, Stockholm, Antarctica, Tel Aviv, Tokyo and in the International Space Station.

Purpose

The goal of Yuri 's Night is to promote the public interest in space exploration and to attract new candidates for this research within the younger generation. Here, the event concept is based on, inspired by the space of artistic expression, and finally empties into a worldwide network of concurrent events with young people who want to shape the future of space exploration in a responsible and far-sighted for the benefit of the whole world. Equipped be global events with a variety of cultural elements such as music, dance, fashion and art.

Initiators

Was launched Yuri's Night by Loretta Hidalgo, George T. Whitesides and Trish Garner. The first such event took place on April 12, 2001; its Russian counterpart, the local day of the cosmonauts, was first celebrated in 1962 in the Soviet Union.

The event in Los Angeles in 2004 was attended by over 100 prominent space scientists, while also the author Ray Bradbury, the space tourist Dennis Tito, founder of the Ansari X Prize, Peter Diamandis, and other celebrities. On the International Astronautical Congress (IAC ) 2013 in Beijing, the work done to date, progress has been presented.
